Today as we look back upon this emotional journey, we realized that the death of Snaily signified the death of our ecosystem. We want to honor his memory by incorporating the ecosystem into our classrooms.

A terrible thing happened today... We lost Shrimpy. We started our observations as usual, searching the bottom for Shrimpy. After a while we found him wedged between some gravel, starting to disintegrate. It is evident that the plants are dying as well. They are turning brown and wilting, sinking to the bottom. We have inferred that the cloud of confusion became the cloud of death, slowly killing everything in the terrarium.
However, the snail is still alive. It in the same place as it usually is, out of the water towards the top of the terrarium. The spearmint still has not grown, making us think that it never will. We can infer that since the plants are dying in the water, we probably won't have any plants in the top of the terrarium because the soil is not receiving clean water from the string. In addition, the condensation seems to be expanding each week and the water level is slowly going down. There are also ants crawling all over our terrarium. We think they may have come from the windowsill. They are making their way through the tape, probably trying to get into the terrarium. Maybe they are attracted to Shrimpy...He seemed to have that effect on everyone. Both Snaily and Shrimpy are kicking . We noticed that Snaily is always outside the water and we never seem him in the water. Shrimpy usually is just swimming around in the water. Today we noticed our cloud of fog around the yarn, near the top of the water line. got bigger today. We noticed multiple students in our class have the same fog this week, so we decided to call it "The Cloud of Confusion." There is still not plants sprouts and we are beginning to lose hope in plant growth. Our water level has decreased by about another half centimeter. Other than that, everything looks the same.
This week we still don't have any plant sprouts but we did notice that there is a cloud of something around our yarn. We don't know what it is but it is like a white cloud surrounding our yarn. There is a lot more condensation on the top tier of our terrarium. Snailey is racing to the top of the bottom tier and Shrimpy is enjoying swimming around. The ecosystem is thriving. Shrimpy is still alive and appears to spend most of his time a the bottom of the terrarium. The shrimp looks healthy based on our observations and is moving a lot among the rocks and plants. Our snail has worked his way out of the water and up near the top of the first level. The is the first we have seen the snail come out of the water.
There wasn't much change in our ecosystem. We haven't seen any plant growth but both Shrimpy and the snail are alive and well. The water level on the bottom tier has dropped by about a centimeter, so hopefully in the coming days we can see plants sprout! Today in our Science Methods class, we created a two tier ecosystem out of recycled three-liter bottles. In the first tier we have a bed of aquarium rocks, water plants, a snail and Shrimpy! In the second tier we planted spearmint seeds in soil. The two tiers are linked with a few pieces of yarn which will use the water in the bottom tier to water the soil in the first tier.
